On March 9, 1862, two epic events took place: The first battle between two Civil War Ironclad ships was waged and the mighty name of a Virginia bourbon was inspired. The former ended in a draw, but the latter has just begun using locally grown grains in a proprietary four-grain mash bill to produce handmade bourbon that’s not only distinct but also mighty tasty.

About Us

The King family-owned Ironclad Distillery is Newport News, Virginia’s first and only operating distillery. Founded in 2015, Ironclad distills, ages and bottles small batch bourbon out of a century-old former dry goods warehouse in the Port of Newport News. We use Virginia grains and six 26-gallon stainless steel stills to make only our own label of bourbon, which is made even more unique by the brackish air that sweeps in constantly from the James River – on the shores of which our distillery sits.

Where to Buy

Right now, Ironclad Bourbon is aging inside charred oak barrels, developing a smooth finish and deep caramel color. So it’s sadly impossible to drink or purchase yet. Sorry, taste buds.

Please check back for updates on distribution locations.

Tours are available by appointment only. To reserve your place, please email RSVP@ironcladdistillery.com.

We will be closed for tours on Christmas Saturday 12/26.

NOTE: If you do distillery tours just to have a taste, you’ll be disappointed. We currently don’t have tastings available while our bourbon is aging.
